endless fields

Yesterday was a beautiful day in this part of Minnesota. At least, the part of the day when it didn't rain. In the early afternoon, the sun and the clouds were just right, so I decided to walk around the neighborhood and take some pictures.

Even though I've lived in this part of town for a few years, I still think it's strange that I have ponds in my neighborhood and corn fields just outside of it. I believe my neighborhood was once a corn field, and the fields to the south of the neighborhood are for sale, so they will probably end up being new homes at some point in time as well. In any case, it's nice to not have buildings and freeways everywhere I look. I like the peace and quiet of the "country", and it only takes me 10-15 minutes to get back to civilization if I need to go shopping or anything like that. We do have Target and grocery stores within a few minutes, so it's really not that bad. We got a lot more house for our money here than we would have if we'd stayed closer to the city as well.

If we had mountains nearby, this place might just be close to perfect.

  1. I like your photos, but I don't think I can be your friend anymore after the cancer-Obama post. Why don't you like him? I totally understand people have different political views, just wondering what your thing with him is. I personally would vote for George W. again than chose to have cancer and I HATE him as our President. And I voted for him, TWICE. But cancer really scares me more.

  2. The "cancer" comment is just my sense of humor. It's something I frequently say (or insert some other horrible affliction) when I don't like or don't want to do something. It doesn't mean I really want cancer. Maybe that aspect of my humor doesn't translate very well without seeing the look on my face.

Anyway, I see Obama as a lot of hype, and not much substance. As I mentioned in the "cancer" post, I have major problems with his voting record and his economic plans. The economy is the issue that matters the most to me, so when I read about his plans to increase corporate taxes, boost the minimum wage by ~30% and the like, that's where he completely loses me. America is already one of the most expensive places on the planet to do business, and Obama's plans will only serve to further scare off foreign investment and destroy the very jobs he claims to want to save. Increased taxation and minimum wages have never served to create jobs. And then there's his desire to pull out of or renegotiate free trade pacts. That reeks of protectionism--another thing with which I have a problem.

The war is another place where I have issues with Obama. I really dislike the war; I dislike the false premises upon which the war was started; I hate the fact that no one in the Bush administration has ever come out and admitted that they screwed up. However, Obama's plans for the military strike me as a plan to cut bait and run. That's something I just can't accept. We've done a lot to damage Iraq and stability in the Middle East; we can't just leave the place in shambles; we can't just throw out a date and say that's when we're going to leave. It would be great if the situation were that simple, but it isn't.

Ultimately, there are a lot worse things that could happen to our country than an Obama presidency. The president doesn't have nearly as much power as many of us would like to believe anyway. Maybe "cancer" was the wrong word. How about chicken pox? ;-)
