vacation day 4 - ketchikan

Our first stop in Alaska was Ketchikan, a small town in southeastern Alaska.

We had decided to do an excursion there that would involve canoeing and driving a jeep, so we headed out early that morning. Canoeing was first, and we got in a very large canoe with at least a dozen other people and paddled leisurely to the other side of a mountain lake. At the other side of the lake, we took a short nature walk and learned about some of the local flora and fauna, and then had a snack of freshly made clam chowder, rolls and jam. It was a good snack, and overall, a good experience. The weather was warm and the skies were clear—something that doesn’t happen all that often in Alaska, apparently.

After canoeing back to where we started, we were paired with another couple and got into a jeep to drive around the back country for a bit. I took the wheel first, and we drove on dirt trails in the mountains for a while. Our jeep didn’t sound very well maintained and I thought the wheels would come off at any given moment, but they didn’t. The roads were probably worse after the other guy and Becca took turns driving, but we survived. The most entertaining part of the ride was probably when the other guy and Becca each went through large puddles while I screamed like a little girl…or maybe it was when our tour guide gave us a quiz over the CB radio on the things she had told us that morning. I took the mic and shouted answers and trash-talked to the other jeeps about how great our jeep was. Juvenile, but fun nonetheless.

After we got back to town, we walked around for a little while. As I mentioned, Ketchikan is a very small town, and thus it didn’t take us long to feel like we’d seen all there was to see. After a short time, we went back to the ship to hang out.

We had a pretty tasty dinner that evening, which consisted of cream of corn soup with chorizo, cod fritters, ravioli for Becca, and sirloin steak for me. We were pretty worn out and not feeling so hot after dinner, so we called it a night and hung out in our room the rest of the evening.
