I love taking photos at night, and I find that a good outdoor fire presents good opportunities for taking photos of people with a minimalist bent. It's dark except for the glow of the fire, so you get to reduce scenes to a few distinct faces and objects. My parents put a gas-powered fire ring in their backyard when they did the landscaping a few years ago, so my nieces/nephews love to go over there and cook marshmallows and smores, and throw things in the fire. We did a bit of this the other night when I was home for a visit. Here are some of the results:
All of these photos were taken using my fastest lens, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4, combined with a lot of high ISO (my camera, the Canon 7D, is great for this). As usual, no editing or Photoshop.
