pre-dawn suburbia

I've been interested in doing more nighttime photography since I got great results doing it in Rome earlier this year. Unfortunately, I typically go to sleep early and don't live all that close to anything interesting that would entice me to stay up later. That said, I think just about anything can be visually interesting if you handle it the right way.

I woke up at 5am this morning and didn't feel like going to the gym right away as I normally would, and since it's pitch black at 5am this time of year, I decided to get out my camera and walk around the neighborhood for a while. I was looking for spontaneity and convenience, so these were all taken without a tripod. I used my Sigma 50mm f/1.4 for all shots. I think the fall colors really helped out in many of the shots, as the yellow and orange leaves tend to come out looking pretty white in black/white.

I think the results are decent, and I'd like to do more of this if the opportunity comes up. I think I'll have to make that happen when we have snow on the ground. Hopefully the neighbors won't find it too weird.

Enjoy.

  1. Cool photos. I like them. I haven't really done a lot of night photography in a long time, but I really enjoy taking that route. Throw a fast lens on, ditch the tripod and just see what you can get.
