fisheye sunrise

I've been too busy (and thus too tired) to write anything lately, so I've let photos do the talking for me. This entry will continue that trend. I didn't leave the house once yesterday, so I decided to take the Canon 15mm f/2.8 fisheye lens I've borrowed for a walk around the neighborhood this morning. Its uses are pretty limited, but it does perform very well--accurate colors, very sharp, etc. As you'll see, sometimes the fisheye rounding effect is very pronounced, and sometimes not at all.

  1. I've thought about picking up a fisheye, but won't until I buy a full frame camera like the 5D. The reason is because the 15 mm f/2.8 fisheye is an EF lens, which means it's designed to cover a full frame's sensor. The dramatic fisheye effect won't really be pronounced on a cropped sensor because the distorted effect falls outside of the area the 1.6x sensor covers... If that makes sense. On a cropped sensor, it pretty much just acts as an ultra wide lens.

Anyway, I like the last picture. Good leading lines in the foreground crops. They take you right over to the sunbeams coming through the clouds on the right side.

    When's your cruise?

  2. We're leaving for the cruise on the 23rd. I just bought a Lowepro CompuTrekker AW Plus backpack so I could take all my lenses (plus a few corpses) on thet trip with me.

I get you on the crop vs. full frame sensor thing. I've read and heard the same thing about prime wide angle lenses, i.e., you see a lot more of the distortion on a full frame than you do on the crop due to the increased sensor size.

Still, I've noticed that opening up the aperture to f/2.8 and maybe 1-3 stops down will also get you the fisheye rounding effect on the 50D. The cattail picture above is a good example. I have to play with it more to perfect getting the effect when I want it, though. This morning's walk was a good start.
